Area recommendations

One of the most beautiful parts of the UK, Exmoor with it’s dramatic coastline, spectacular hiking trails, top notch surf spots and beaches to spend the day, you have a lot of options to pack into your stay!

Hiking & Walking

  • Heddon’s Mouth Trail

A firm favourite walk that’s only 10 minutes drive, and with a great pub (with peacocks) at the end! Walk down the valley and come out at a pebbly beach. It has a great feel to it

  • Great Hangman

Also 10 minutes from us, a 4 mile or so steep walk past Little Hangman to Great Hangman, the highest point on the South West. coastal path. Hang in there for the views, they are truly spectacular on a good day.

  • Dunkery Beacon

There are many routes available, but a visit to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor, 360 degree views in the middle of Exmoor. It’s wonderful.

  • Braunton Burrows

Walking through a vast area rugged sand dunes, it’s got to be done whilst here, it doesn’t quite feel like you’re in England. Take a picnic.

Beaches

  • Broadsands Beach

One of North Devon’s best little gems, it’s only 240 steps down (and back up) the rock face to get to a beach that is surely taken straight out of Thailand or Greece! Definitely a must visit in the afternoon at low tide when it’s best for sun and exploring.

  • Woolacombe Beach

Park at Marine Drive car park close to the Porthole Cafe and drop down the dunes. Low tide is best. Walk to Putsborough and back.

  • Combe Martin Beach

When the wind is down, hire a kayak or a paddleboard and cruise around the coast, it’s so relaxing. A perfect beach if you’re into floating.

  • Barricane Beach

A protected sandy beach just next to Woolacombe, we recommend going there at low tide and late afternoon just when the Barricane Beach Cafe is opening for a particularly good curry. Take drinks, blankets and cash and you’re in for a real treat.

Restaurants and Pubs

  • Pyne Arms - East Down

Our family choice given that it is down the road and simply excellent award-winning food and ambiance. A terrific well run family pub open Wed-Sun. Book as early as you can.

  • Kentisbury Grange Hotel - Kentisbury

Also exceptionally good food, particularly for Sunday roasts. Another favourite of ours right next door, particularly for finer dining.

  • The Oak Room - Lynton

A quaint little tapas restaurant with just a few tables, another award-winner, terrific service, and the food…oh the food is, well, mouthwateringly 10/10. What more can we say.

  • The Porthole Cafe

The perfect pit stop on the top of Woolacombe beach overlooking the entirety of it. 180 degree views. The coffee is artisan, and ale, ice cream, their food cannot be missed, all laid out beautifully, you just cannot say no.

Organised Activities

  • North Devon Wake Park

Great if you want to test out wakeboarding or improve, and of course awesome exercise. A very friendly family business. Good fun.

  • Lundy Island boat trip

Daily boat trips to see this intriguing island with very few inhabitants, aboard the traditional MS Oldenburg ship. It’s a great day out. It takes 2 hours either way.

  • Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway

Lynton & Lynmouth are a highly popular tourist destination for a day out, eating fish & chips and some shopping by the beach. Much choice. And of course the cliff railway is never missed by holiday makers.

  • Horse Riding on Exmoor

Just up the road, a very friendly bunch of horses…and instructors! A favourite with our family for all year round riding. And what better place to ride?
