Ever stayed in a 200yr old Coach House?
The groom's room is a cozy little attic space above the stables. Up some slate steps to big old wooden door, and inside is a little nest of oak beams, king size bed, kitchenette, bistro table, and shower room - the perfect place to spend the night, then off to explore the beautiful Devon in the morning.
In the grounds of the grand old rectory, the Coach House sits around 20m from the main house, but is very private and not overlooked.
The Coach House……..
In true Devon style, as well as our quirky family style, you'll probably be met with the very loud welcoming bray of our young donkey who is in the paddock next to the stables, you won't miss her! She was raised on a bottle so thinks she is a human, and will always be happy to say hello.
Then there are the neighbouring cows. If you like cattle, then great - as they can be pretty vocal at night, and it can smell pretty farmy at times in the winter months. We don't really notice it, you may do if you aren't used to it, but it's all quintessentilly Devon, and we love it.
Then there's Exmoor! A short walk up a steep farm track for 300m and you're in the moors, which is as picturesque a part of the country as it gets. Keep walking or cycling a few minutes further, and you'll see the view of just about the whole of the area around Barnstaple and the bay on one side, plus the hills and 300m high gentle peaks of Hangman's Hill, Holdstone Down and the area around Combe Martin beach. On a sunny evening when the sky is a rich red, the sight is just unbelieveable.
The house is accessed via electric gates, up a gravel driveway which overlooks the manicured gardens, past the main house (the rectory) to the Coach House. Park anywhere, or right outside the Coach House. From here, you can walk or cycle up through the top entrance past the farmyard next door, to Exmoor.
There's normally always someone around to welcome you, if not, we'll leave a key out.
Tucked out of the way in the middle of fields, with 2 distant neighbours
You're gonna need some wheels, or good shoes :-)
The house is a private family residence with young children and a few animals running around the garden (ponies, donkey, chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks, cats, and of course a dog).
As the building is old, the slate and stone stairs are very steep and not overly easy on the weaker knees, but if you're here for a walking holiday, then you won't even notice!
There is a combi oven/microwave and single induction hob, with a foldaway bistro table and chairs to dine at. The room is small but perfect for 2! The kitchenette has all general cooking utensils, olive oil, salt, pepper, etc.
